Your citation will depend on what type of social media post your are citing and in which citation style (e.g. MLA or APA).

This is how you would cite a tweet:

MLA style:

(First Name Last Name if known). "The entire tweet word-for-word." Twitter, Day Month Year of Tweet, Time of Tweet, URL.

Example:

@ReallyVirtual (Sohaib Athar). "Helicopter hovering above Abbottad at 1AM is a rare event." Twitter,, 4 Jan. 2013, 3:58 p.m., twitter.com/reallyvirtual/status/64780730286358528?lang=en.

APA style:

Twitter handle. (Year, Month Day). Entire tweet message. [Twitter post]. Retrieved from https://twitter.com

Example:

Rouhani, H. [@HassanRouhani]. (2013, October 01). Evening, @Jack. As I told @camanpour, my efforts geared 2 ensure my ppl'll comfortably b able 2 access all info globally as is their #right. [Tweet]. Retrieved from https://twitter.com/HassanRouhani/status/385138174822850560

Consult the Writing and Citing’ LibGuide (section on MLA and APA style formats) for access to guidance and tutorials on citing social media posts. In particular, there's a link on the LibGuide to the Purdue University OWL website (look for sections on MLA and APA for the format of specific types of citations, including particular social media sites). You can also search the MLA's Works Cite: A Quick Guide and APA Style Blog websites for proper citation of social media posts for MLA Style and APA Style respectively.
