Q. Where can I find information on non-profit organizations?

The Library's business and industry databases can provide information on non-profit organizations. 

Library Databases - 

• Proquest Central - This database provides full-text articles from The Journal of Nonprofit Education and Leadership and Nonprofit Policy Forum and articles related to nonprofits from newspapers such as the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. Or use specific keywords such as "starting" or "legal issues" along with the search term "nonprofit." 

• Academic Search Premier - Search this database to find articles on nonprofit organizations from academic journals, trade journals, and newspapers using the search term "nonprofit."  

• IBISWorld - Use this database to find industry profiles related to various nonprofit sectors of the United States. Use the keyword "nonprofit" in the search box. Examples are industry profiles on museums; daycare centers; drug and rehab clinics; adoptions & child welfare services; and health & welfare funds.

You can also check these reliable web resources:

• The GuideStar National Database of Nonprofit Organizations - Requires free registration. Provides a searchable database on nonprofit organizations (for example you can find a Foundation Center located in various U.S. cities).
• Citizen Audit - Full-text searchable database of nonprofit financials.
• The Chronicle of Philanthropy - News organization providing fundraisers, grant makers, and others involved in the philanthropic enterprise advice as well as to help nonprofit workers with listings of career opportunities.

Note: Nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status are required to file Form 990 (Return of Organizations Exempt From Income Tax) with the IRS. The form includes financial statements and background information on the nonprofit. You can do a web search to access the financial information of the organization by using "990" plus the name of the nonprofit as keywords.
